• SCIENTIFIC SCOPE

    The aim of the CRCL International Cancer Symposium is to address fundamental issues of cancer biology from the molecular and biochemical determinants of cancer initiation and dissemination, to the impact of the tumour microenvironment and immunity, and to emphasise synergy between basic, clinical, and translational research. This meeting will also address how tumour cell plasticity contributes to enhanced tumour heterogeneity, sustained metastatic dissemination and escape from conventional and targeted therapies.
  • SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS

    Based on the scientific scope of the meeting, the following thematic sessions are planned:  
    • Session 1: Stem cells and cancer cell plasticity
      Intra-tumor heterogeneity and cancer cell plasticity are key aspects of tumor development by supporting cancer relapse and escape from therapies and have significant clinical implications. Intra-tumor heterogeneity arises not only from genetics but also from other sources such as epigenetics, environmental factors, metabolism and the activation of ongenic signalling pathways. Cellular plasticity allows the acquisition of identity and phenotypical changes, thus providing adaptability and survival capacities to cancer cells, and favoring tumor initiation and development. In this session, key players in the field with discuss the role of cancer cell plasticity and intra-tumoral heterogeneity in the adaptation of cancer stem cells and cancer cells to the selective pressure occurring during tumour initiation and progression.
    • Session 2: Tumor microenvironment and immunity
      Tumor cells establish multiple interactions with their microenvironment, composed of soluble molecules, extracellular matrix, mechanical forces and non-transformed mesenchymal, endothelial or immune cells. Increasing evidences support the view that this complex ecosystem plays an active role in different aspects of cancer such as initiation, progression and resistance. Deciphering the reciprocal interactions between these different elements, involving among others immune responses, inflammation, angiogenesis and metabolism is a key step toward understanding cancer ecology and dynamic and will help developing new therapeutic innovations. This session will cover several topics in this field, from immune response to signaling pathways alterations in stroma and cancer cells as well as the translational impact of targeting the microenvironment.
    • Session 3: Ribosomes and cancer
      The ribosome is the cellular machinery that synthesizes proteins from messenger RNAs. This sentence sounds straightforward for any scientist, however it concentrates more than 50 years of intense research and technological developments. This tremendous work was rewarded by the Nobel Prize in 2009, and we will have the honor to welcome Ada Yonath, one of its recipients, to present her vision of the modern ribosome. The ribosome is indeed an old discovery dating back to the mid-1960s that still continues to provide unexpected revelations. During the last 10 years, scientists have finally unraveled its importance for improving both understanding and management of cancer: not only is the ribosome a direct actor of translation that contributes to setting cancer hallmarks, but it is also an innovative target that is currently evaluated in clinical trials. More recently, the finding that chemical modifications of ribosomal RNAs contribute to the fine tuning of translational regulation, notably in cancer cells, has launched the ribosome into the exciting field of epitranscriptomics. Due to these significant advances, the session on ribosomes will a high point of the 4th International Symposium of the CRCL.
    • Session 4: Cancer genetics
